The school was founded in 1974 by Mr. Robert Street assisted by his wife Jean, who are both professionals in the field of education. They had felt the need of an English medium school that would impart education of high quality to the children of the town and to those who came from other towns without such facilities.

Dormitory
Provision for the amenities and convenience that are to be provided for the students in the dormitories has been one of the primary concerns of the institution since inception. Care has been taken to make the hostels appear less like hostels and more like homes, so that opportunity for creativity and learning are guaranteed. The boarders are entrusted to the care of experienced staff, separate for boys and the girls, with their dormitories, spacious, well ventilated and lit, with attached toilets. In addition the following have been catered for.
Staff and Teachers
Teaching-learning at St.John’s is a testimonial to the adage “The knowledge of the world can only be acquired in the world and not sitting in the closet.”
Practical experience is an integral part of the teaching – learning process. The faculty is trained and encouraged to use audio-visual displays and models so as to help the students assimilate faster and more thoroughly.
Regular workshops are conducted with eminent personalities on various subjects. These are not only a forum for learning, but also for active interactions and intelligent discussions.
Field trips to historical, geographical and tourist sites feature strongly on the School’s annual calendar. We stress on student participation in these outings as they serve as an informal and fun – filled environment for learning.

It is my pleasure to welcome you to St John’s School Whitehall, a place where tradition meets innovation in education. As an English-medium, being one of the first coeducational institution established in Shillong, we are committed to providing a well-rounded education that nurtures both academic excellence and strong moral values.
Our school serves students from the foundational years in our Kindergarten section (Nursery to Preparatory) through Class 10, maintaining a strict teacher-student ratio of no more than 1:30. This ensures personalised attention, fostering both intellectual and personal growth. Additionally, we offer a dedicated Higher Secondary wing for Classes 11 and 12, welcoming students from other schools.
In today’s rapidly evolving world, Educational Technology (EdTech) plays a crucial role in learning. However, at St John’s Whitehall, we believe that technology must complement—not replace—the timeless foundations of education: Reading, Writing, and Arithmetic. Alongside modern learning tools, we place great emphasis on good handwriting, elocution, discipline, moral values, and, above all, happiness in the classroom.
The school was established in 1974 primarily as an affordable boarding institution, with opportunities for day scholars from the surrounding area.
