The school was founded in 1974 by Mr. Robert Street assisted by his wife Jean, who are both professionals in the field of education. They had felt the need of an English medium school that would impart education of high quality to the children of the town and to those who came from other towns without such facilities.

Hence, the school was started in Shillong in a rented Bungalow in1974 and moved to its present site where the founders had begun construction of the school buildings.

In the passing years since its inception, the school has largely fulfilled its aims and objectives, as its past pupils testify.

The school has no endowments or trust funds and neither does it receive grants from the Government; it is entirely dependent on income from fees.

Nestled among the cool and pleasant whispering pines of the East Khasi Hills, St. John’s Whitehall is situated 5000 ft. above sea level. The location and the climate are most conducive to learning. The School provides quality education to some 600 boys and girls, the majority of whom are boarders.

It is the earnest endeavor of the school to enable its pupils become mature and committed citizens of the country.
